Airbnb listing guide

Build an Airbnb gallery that survives the search grid.

Airbnb decides in a thumbnail. Finish the cover photo for legibility at small size, then structure the tour so each room earns its place.

A gallery built around how Airbnb actually displays it.

The problem

Airbnb shows your listing at about 300 pixels wide.

Guests scroll a grid of cards, and the cover photo is the entire listing at that moment. Detail that reads beautifully at full size — a well-styled shelf, a subtle view, delicate window light — disappears completely at card size. What survives is one strong shape, one clear light source, and one obvious reason to tap.

Our method

Finish for the thumbnail, then check at full size.

ListPik lifts the mid-tones and local contrast that keep a cover photo legible when it is scaled down, without the crunchy oversharpening that becomes obvious when a guest opens the listing. Review every cover candidate twice: once full size for accuracy, once at card size for impact.

Truth boundaryOccupancy, amenities, views, furnishings, access, and property condition must remain truthful. ListPik is an independent third party and is not endorsed by or associated with Airbnb, Inc.

The cover photo and the first four

Airbnb's listing page leads with a hero image and a small cluster of previews before a guest opens the full photo tour. Those first frames carry disproportionate weight: they are what a guest sees while deciding whether to keep reading, and they are what appears when a listing is shared. The strongest set is usually the main living space, the primary bedroom, the kitchen, and whichever outdoor space or view differentiates the property.

The common mistake is leading with a detail shot. A beautifully composed photo of a coffee setup on a windowsill says nothing about whether the property suits a family of four, and at card size it reads as an unidentifiable brown rectangle. Lead with space, then reward the guest who opens the tour with the details.

Ordering the tour the way guests walk it

Airbnb groups photos into a room-by-room tour, which rewards galleries that follow a logical path rather than a highlight reel. Entrance, main living space, kitchen and dining, then bedrooms in order, then bathrooms, then outdoor space and amenities. A guest who can assemble the layout from the photos asks fewer pre-booking questions and cancels less often.

Two frames per major room is usually the right density: one wide to establish the space and one that shows the detail or the view. More than that and the tour becomes tiring; fewer and guests start guessing at what has been left out, which is the assumption you least want them making.

  • Lead with living space, not a detail shot
  • Shoot landscape — Airbnb's grid crops portrait images hard
  • Two frames per major room, wide first
  • Refresh the cover seasonally if the outdoor space changes

Where it fits

Use enhancement when the photograph is the problem.

01

The cover is losing the scroll

The photo is fine at full size but unreadable in the search grid.

02

The gallery is inconsistent

Photos accumulated over several seasons and cameras do not look like one property.

03

A reshoot is not realistic

The listing needs to go live or refresh now and the existing frames are structurally sound.

A three-part desk

Fast enough for the deadline. Deliberate enough for the listing.

  1. 01

    Upload the original

Use the largest source file and choose an interior or exterior finishing direction.

  2. 02

    Review the evidence

Inspect the result beside the source. The property should remain immediately recognizable.

  3. 03

    Export with context

Download the approved image and follow the disclosure rules that apply to your listing.

Before you publish

  • View the cover at roughly 300px wide — the main feature must still be obvious.
  • Confirm the gallery reads as one property, not several shoots stitched together.
  • Check that sleeping arrangements shown match the occupancy claimed in the listing.
  • Verify no amenity appears in a photo that guests will not actually have access to.

Specific answers

What to know before processing.

What size should Airbnb photos be?+

Upload the largest landscape original you have. Airbnb generates its own sizes, and a large clean source gives the best result at every one of them.

How many photos should an Airbnb listing have?+

Enough to walk the property without gaps — typically two per major room plus outdoor space and amenities. Completeness matters more than a high count.

Can I use AI-enhanced photos on Airbnb?+

ListPik exports standard image files and corrects the photograph rather than the property. Check Airbnb's current content policies and keep the originals for comparison.
